You Do Not Need the Perfect Prompt
You can start with a rough idea, explain things out of order, remember details halfway through, or admit you are not even sure what you are trying to ask.
Overview
Talking with AI does not have to begin with a carefully written question. The conversation below is intentionally a little messy because real conversations often are. The notes beside it show what AI noticed and why those clues mattered.
What to tell AI
Start with whatever you already know. You can mention what is happening, what you are trying to accomplish, what is making it difficult, or anything you definitely do or do not want. You do not need to provide all of it at once.
“I’m not even sure I’m asking the right question, but here’s what’s going on…”
Example conversation

Behind the Conversation
- The guest count is not final.
- The user does not actually object to cooking.
- Spending time with family matters.
AI knows the meal needs to scale and should not require much attention once guests arrive.

Behind the Conversation
- The user changed their mind while talking.
- Convenience is acceptable.
- They want the meal to feel thoughtful.
AI can reshape an option around the concern underneath the words.

Behind the Conversation
- The headcount may change.
- One guest is unpredictable.
- Last-minute cooking is the biggest stress.
A build-your-own meal solves several needs at once.
What happened in that conversation?
The user never wrote one polished prompt. They thought out loud, remembered details later, changed their mind, and contradicted themselves a little. AI built a clearer picture one clue at a time.
Helpful variations
You do not always have to know what to ask
AI can also help you discover the question. Try asking:
Remember
You can always say, “That looks good, but can we make it simpler / cheaper / faster?” I’ll adjust.
